Studio Brief 01 - Reflective Practice - Pop Culture

Recently two of my favourite popstars Marina and the Diamonds and Charli XCX caused an uproar on social media due to Marina commenting on a instagram post of Charli posing in tropical lemon infused photoshoot for her new fragrance line with Impulse.

Marina left a message simply stating "That FROOT looks similar" - for those who don't know that is her 2015 successful album FROOT (pictured below)

Basically Marina was trying to get at, was that she thinks Charli has copied/stole/taken her artwork for her song "Immortal".

Ironically the photograph was taken by the same photographer Charlotte Rutherford.

The photos are rather similar and in response Charli responded to Marina explaining how she had never seen her artwork and that she would never intend to copy ententially.

Who is at fault? Is Charli's similar fruit themed photoshoot stealing anything away from Marina's? Or is the photographer at fault - recycling old photoshoots?

It is really hard to say.

What I am getting at is that is it okay to use others ideas? and How far can you take it without it becoming fraud?

Studio Brief 01 - Reflective Practice - V Magazine

V MAGAZINE

In attempt to delve myself further into the fashion world I purchased the 100th issue (mostly because of Britney).

I'm currently waiting for it to arrive in the post, but I plan on critically analysing some of the design, layout and photography work within the spread.

I'm going to investigate into the grids (if any) and try and work out whether the magazine has a pattern or a solid structure it heavily relies on.

So many magazines rely on a basic layout they create themselves and they usually stick to it - except in some parts it is completely not used. I find it really interesting how this system works and it's something I want to explore deeper - especially as my increase in passion for editorial magazines increases, I think it would be beneficial in the long run.

Studio Brief 02 - Self Branding - Social Media

??????????

When designing my business card and thinking about what information I am going to include I realised I didn't want much to be given.

Simply including a @domcartledge

and my logo -

The @domcartledge is used on all my social media accounts.

Studio Brief 02 - Self Branding - Final T-Shirt Designs

Here are my final t-shirt designs.

My t-shirt designs have been heavily influenced by fashion brands and companies I admire and purchase from myself. I have incorporated my own concepts and included traits/aesthetics/colours that represent me.

Most importantly I designed them in mind that I would wear them myself.

This design particularly focuses on my love of photography.

It also links in with my social media presence, as it is a previous post of mine (the photograph).

It is also one of my favourite shots.

The type on the back plays with the idea the plants in the photo look like palm trees. It relates to the idea that in photography you can create your own world and imagine an idea and bring it alive through a lense.

I plan on using methods such as screen printing and t-shirt transfers in order to bring my designs to life.

I have purchased two white short-sleeve t-shirts, one black and another white long-sleeve t-shirt by Fruit of the Loom. They are an intentional company that sells plain/basic coloured clothing.

I understand if I was to take my project further and actually sell my t-shirt designs I could use a t-shirt design that would have my own label or be completely plain - so I use my own labels.

Studio Brief 02 - Self Branding - STEFFEN GRAP

Steffan Grap is a fashion brand I have been following for the past few months. It is a fairly new brand that put out their first line in January.

I have been wanting to purchase something from their online store steffangrap.bigcartel.com for so long and will probably soon.

The designs and simplistic, minimal and feature both type and photography.

The sell t-shirts and hoodies with similar designs.

I first came across them by finding their instagram account when looking through a few fashion based accounts that promote various new designers. I was instantly drawn to their photoshoots and the designs they were showcasing. They look so thought out - from the colours, the models and the surroundings - which create a mood/vibe the clothing gives off.

What I found interesting also was the fact one of the models was actually in the photograph that is printed on the t-shirts.
